Consumer Psychology

A scientist who does research in economic psychology and who wants to predict the way in which consumers will spend their money must study consumer behavior. He must obtain data both on the resources of consumers and on the motives that tend encourage or discourage money spending.

If an economist were asked which of three groups borrow most – people with rising incomes, stable incomes, or declining incomes – he would probably answer: those with declining incomes. Actually, in the years 1947-1950, the answer was people with rising incomes. People with declining incomes were next and people with stable incomes borrowed the least. If people who have money expect prices to go up, the economist would say that they will hasten to buy. If they expect prices to go down, they will postpone buying. Contrary to the economist’s assumption, research surveys have shown that this not always true, as the expectations of price increases may not stimulate buying. A rise in prices may be resented and buyer’s resistance may be evoked.

Traditional assumption about earning and spending should be investigated carefully, and factors of time and place should be considered. The investigations mentioned above were carried out in America. Research conducted at the same time in Britain, however, yielded results that were more in agreement with traditional assumptions about saving and spending patterns. The condition most conductive to spending appears to be price stability. If prices have stable and people have become accustomed to consider them “right” and expect them to remain stable, they are likely to buy.
Thus, it appears that the common business policy of maintaining stable prices with occasionally sales or discounts is based on a correct understanding of consumer psychology.

Part III. After reading the above text. Write in one sentence the main idea of this article. 2 points

I think your items are too long and complex, especially the listening item, in my opinion, I think the items are difficult for students.

Hi, Alexander:

I consider your items too complex, I think your first writing exercise is even more complex than the text, I had to read it more than once.

Hello, Im truly sorry it took me so long to read my own comments je je je. Well, I think these items are designed taking into account our EFL students, who happen to be false beginners. The reading has to do with the level of English they have. I could propably low the complexity of the items for them to answer the questions. I will take into account your comments. Thank you SO very much!
